    Description

Up for auction is this very rare and beautiful oblong studio pottery Danish dish plate tray from Michael Andersen & Son. Designed by Marianne Stark and produced in Bornholm, Denmark, it features a playful modernist design depicting 3 vikings in a viking ship / boat with the Persia craquelure glaze in red, blue and yellow. Would be a great addition to a Danish modern display, setting or collection. Stamped on bottom with the Michael Andersen 3 fish mark, and "MS" painted mark for Marianne Stark.
In good vintage condition, with no cracks or chips. Just a small area of manufacturing glaze pops on the bottom. Original sticker on the bottom is still there.
Measures about 16.5" long and 5.5" wide (41.9 cm, 14 cm).
While the award winning and amazing “Persia” glaze at Michael Andersen & Sons was developed in the 1930s by Daniel Andersen (1885-1959) and used on pieces from that date, I think it is the designs of Marianne Starck at MAS & Sons in the 1950s and 1960s where the Persia glaze is seen at its best. This piece is from exactly this period!
This complex glaze turns out differently on each piece, depending on the glaze colourants used and style of decoration. Sometimes it appears like a pearlescent multi coloured micro-mosaic, and at other times as a more subtle pattern decoration with grey pearlescent hues. Often the pieces using this glaze have beautiful but subtle oxidization of the glaze, giving some of the colours a slightly metallic appearance – especially noticeable on the red color of the Viking longboat.
The glaze is also surprisingly smooth and silky to the touch. The Persia glaze was used on all types of forms – from utilitarian pieces to sculptural forms.
This is an amazing example in excellent condition with no post-production cracks, chips, or losses!
Would make a fantastic display piece, fine addition to a collection, or a great gift!
