Description
WWII/Holocaust era camps > Sawin(Poland):
1 Oct 1940
postmarked imprinted cover
sent ostensibly from an "organist"
at the Church of SAWIN to Jozef Adamski at MYSZKOW,
franked 24 groszy
using General Gouvernement district overprinted Polish stamps at the period domestic base letter postage rate of 12 pfennig (1pf = 2gr during the occupation) & cancelled by 2x strikes of the
CHELM-LUBLIN
post office postmark.
As the cover bear bears the simple framed
black "SAWIN" handstamp
this cover originates with the
local Jewish forced labor camp
: a local Judenrat (Jewish Council) was formed by the Germans already in Sept. 1939 and Jews were drafted into forced labor in a local camp. Between 1940-1942 about 1700 Jews were brought to the camp from neaby towns & from Cracow; Israeli sources mention that
the local (non-Jewish) community enlisted to help them
.
Here this
cover may be undercover mail
prepared by someone at the camp but actually
dispatched via the "Roman Catholic Parish"
as per the
Polish handstamp
of the sender as "Rzymskokatolicki Parafil Sawin" specifically identified in manuscript above as an organist ("organista") & dated the day before the posting in CHELM. A similar type cover also mailed by an "organist" is known to this cataloguer from the camp at Wojceichow. Cut open at right.
Rare as from a very obscure camp + scarce postage rate.
